MORE ON THE ANGLICAN CHAPLAINCY at the University of Lesotho
The Chaplaincy on the university campus has for many years been the centre of the Anglican community. Dr Jack Mulder, SACDTrust Director, was himself a student in Lesotho and remembers the time when Anglican students held services in various lecture rooms until a temporary multi-purpose room/hall was built. Many years later a small chapel was built (see below) for the Anglican community including staff and students on this former Pius XII College campus. The latter and the present day National Univeristy of Lesotho served as an important tertiary educational institution, who welcomed many refugee students from the apartheid regime of South Africa. It was also an educational haven for many from Zimbabwe, whne Ian Smith declared UDI. The Anglican Chaplaincy served as a community centre for many of these students and continues to do so for the present student population.

The university has grown and the number of students including Anglican students has increased dramatically. Fr Kheekhe the Chaplain explains that the small chapel, which is used for worship and a range of activities including student AIDS Advice centre, community meeting space and outreach, is now completely inadequate for the needs and numbers. Many cannot enter the building on Sundays and the outside space has become part of the chapel (see photographs of the queues for communion). The new Bishop of Lesotho has given his complete support to this vision of extending the building, which will serve many future generations.

Mr. Lartey, the Principal writes:
Your donation of R50,000 (£3250) has made it possible
to install water and gas pipes, roof, floor and plaster it. We shall be
installing sinks and painting it soon after the school opens on 3rd
August. Other work such as building the laboratory benches would not be
possible due to inadequate funds. However the level of your donation has taken
us so far has made the learners and their parents proud of the school. They are
grateful for your continuous support.
As Director of
the Trust I visited this school on a number of occasions and have met with Mr.
Lartey and his staff. The school is quite remote and not well resourced because
government funds are very limited. This however does not deter the dedicated team
that teaches there. To have the vision to build a science laboratory at a
school so remote demonstrates the dedication of the leadership and staff to
educate their students whatever the constraints. Students would never have the
opportunity to do basic science experiments without this facility. It is not
surprising that the parents are proud of their school.
As supporters of
the Trust, all of you share in this achievement. I believe that because of its progress and
its commitment to education, Mr. Lartey and his team at
